Exciting Evansville, Indiana
2004 All American City

Settled by pioneer immigrants some 200 years ago, the city of Evansville is situated on a gentle horseshoe bend on All American Citythe Ohio River. As testament to the Ohio’s grandeur, the early French explorers named it La Belle Riviere (“The Beautiful River”). Before the pioneers, Evansville was home first to an ancient community of Native Americans called the Mississippians. Today we honor them with annual festivals and ceremonial reenactments at the Angel Mounds Historic Site, which is recognized as one of the best-preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the United States.

In the early stages of economic development, Evansville relied mainly upon the commercial promise of the river and the region’s abundant lumber, rich coalfields and fertile soil. The population grew quickly in the 1840s as many German immigrants moved into the area, bringing with them excellent trade skills, a robust work ethic and strong cultural identity that is still with us today. By the turn of the century, Evansville had become the second-largest city in Indiana and a major commercial center of the region. In the past 100 years, Evansville has been a major producer of furniture, automobiles, refrigerators, plastics, military aircraft and transport ships, and pharmaceuticals.
